The main character in the series, Kaito is a very special boy. He knows a lot about magic tricks, and has an IQ of 400 (?!). In his large list of abilities, we find that he can imitate any voice, or practically anyone, and is very very athletic. He is very good at skiing but can't ice-skate at all. He likes chocolate but he hates fish. He likes making tricks on Aoko ^^ (especially for seeing her panties)
In the first File, Kaito finds out that his father used to be the legendary Kaitou Kid (Kid the Phantom Thief) and after finding out how he died 8 years ago, he decides to take his identity to meet his dad's assassins. Kaitou Kid is a thief who always sends messages to places such as museums saying what he will steal, and the hour and date he will do it. He always makes a fool of the police, and especially Nakamori Ginzo... His methods include, like I said before, magic tricks, imitations, and other things like replicas of himself, his doves, and the gun which shoots... poker cards xD
"1412" is a special code. It comes from "compressing" (or sorta) the numbers, to get "Kid".
People loves him and sometimes they go to cheer him when he steals! Kaito simply loves it.
BTW, Kaito always makes use of his unknown identity just to get closer to girls xD He's a pervert.
But his only love is Aoko, his childhood friend. But he prefers expressing the other way round...
On his name: "Kaitou" means "Thief", the name "Kaito" has no special meaning. "Kuroba" means "black feather", which is weird since Kaito has doves...

Aoko is Kaito's classmate and his childhood friend. Curiously, she's Nakamori Ginzo's daughter, so you can figure Aoko hates Kaitou Kid... She is kind and cares much about Kaito, but she's also very intelligent. She's kinda of childish, but well... Aoko is really baaaad at skiing, but her ice-skating is quite good (yes, just the opposite as Kaito!). Also she's bad at videogames. She starts to like fish, because Kaito hates it (he starts screaming when he sees one). But she loves Kaito, although she doesn't want to admit it.

Ginzo is a police officer, but not a very good one. He's not very intelligent (pretty much like Mouri Kogoro from Meitantei Conan). However, he's quite stubborn and is very determinated to catch Kid, and according to him, he's his worst enemy. His methods are really funny and ridiculous. His relationship with Aoko isn't very close since he's always thinking of his work.

He's the son of a police officer, who curiously is a Ginzo's superior. Hakuba is a talented detective who has studied in England and also helps in the Police. His behaviour is very Sherlock Holmes-like, and his sign is the phrase "Why did you do it?"
After having a "skirmish" with Kid, he enters the same school (and class) as him and starts flirting with Aoko, so he automatically becomes Kaito's enemy.
Hakuba is MUCH more effective than Ginzo in his work, and he's always close to catch Kid.
If he knows or not that Kaito is Kid, is a mystery...

It's said she's the last true black witch in world. Akako is a beautiful girl who can put every man under her service. Except Kaito, of course, and when she finds out that, Akako decides to enter Kaito's class. She gets obsessed with him and tries to make him her slave all the time. She also realizes that Aoko is in her way, so Akako hates her... the funny thing is that Aoko really admires her.
Through Kaito she learns that not everything is possible with magic, because some people's hearts can't be controled... like Kaito's.
Akako is the closest character to know Kaito's secret, she's even more certain that Hakuba.

Keiko is Aoko's best friend (after Kaito, of course). Like most people, she loves Kid and Hakuba. Keiko is convinced that Aoko & Kaito should be together, and is always joking about that. She isn't very developed in the story, but appears in many files.

Toichi was Kaito's father. He taught Kaito everything about magic tricks and the poker face. He was a famous magician, but he also was Kaitou Kid. Sadly, for some reason an organization killed him while perfoming an act.
That's why Kaito takes his "job", to find out what happened.
